RFID baggage tracking systems offer an ideal solution to labor intensive barcode systems that are inaccurate 15% of the time resulting in several thousand lost pieces of baggage every day.
Airlines manage a huge amount of baggage that needs to be loaded and unloaded in as short a time as possible before being sent to the proper destinations. Airports charged with public safety must work side by side with the airlines too insure all checked in bags are scanned properly and routed to the right airline and the right plane. Tagged luggage can be tracked through a network of RFID readers placed over conveyor belts, inspection areas, and loading piers.
RFID tags are applied to luggage at check-in before passing through inspection machines, which scan for explosives and other banned items. Readers at the exit of the inspection area let the baggage-management system know which bags have been diverted for manual security examination and which have been cleared.
After the inspections, bags move past RFID readers setup on conveyors to loading piers, where they are loaded into the ULDs that carry them to the waiting planes. Handheld readers can be used by loading staff to quickly ensure incorrect bags aren’t loaded on to the wrong planes.
